Underestimating components for better recyclates.
When Design for Recycling is discussed, one crucial topic is often overlooked: the choice of the right adhesives, inks and finishes. They have a significant influence on the quality of recycled materials – whether plastics or paper. To solve the problem, you could dispense with labels altogether, as shown here in our thought experiment. Or we could ensure that these components harmonize with standard recycling processes.

Such as Aquence PS 3017 RE, the water-based adhesive solution that Henkel launched on the market in 2024. Here, recyclability was given top priority during development and certified by third parties.
The acrylate adhesive is used for olefin film labels that are applied to PET bottles. While an energy-intensive high-temperature process was previously required to completely remove the labels, the new adhesive offers improved washability – even at 65 °C for PE facestock. The lower energy consumption in the process also helps to better preserve the quality of the PET. What is particularly exciting for us as a food packaging agency is that the adhesive is also approved for food contact.

When it comes to printing, there are also pioneers who see recyclability and circularity as a top priority. For example, the Austrian printing company Gugler was the first printing company in the world to receive Cradle to Cradle certification. The company has been awarded the seal for a total of 81 components. All substances used in printing are examined, taking into account the entire supply chain. In addition to bio-based and water-based printing inks, Gugler offers sustainable film lamination, hot foil stamping, a wider range of papers and a variety of dyed papers with different surface embossing.
Our conclusion: paints and adhesives often adapt a “low-hanging fruit” in order to optimize a product for recycling. In the course of the legal recyclability requirements, we will certainly see more of this!
