Transparency for the consumer.

New laws such as the PPWR and the Green Claims Directive are intended to ensure that the circular economy is promoted for packaging and that consumers are better informed. In order to make the information needed to achieve these goals available, the“Digital Product Passport” (DPP) is to be introduced from February 2027. It obliges companies to make information on raw materials, production processes and the recyclability of a product available digitally.

As part of the Ecodesign Regulation, it is intended to promote sustainable business practices and, above all, make factors such as a product’s reparability, CO2 balance or resource requirements transparent. To this end, a basic digital infrastructure must be established and products must be provided with clearly identifiable and readable markers (such as QR codes). In future, customers will be able to obtain detailed information directly when making their purchase decision. The “digital twin” could also be used to optimize recycling, for example to sort plastic waste more efficiently.

However, the first implementation of the DPP will not be for packaging, but for batteries – but it should be mandatory for all products by 2030 at the latest. And even if it sounds like an additional expense for manufacturers and brands at first, the DPP can also be used to promote sales.
In addition to technical information, offers, marketing measures and customer benefits can also be stored and displayed digitally.

We are already making rapid progress and, together with our partners at Info.link, are providing a solution that combines the optional with the mandatory. Info.link provides a simple and flexible platform on which all mandatory and required information is displayed – and we adapt the artwork on the packaging to be legally compliant and appealing.
The consumer gets all the information – simply via a QR code – and the manufacturer is already fit for 2030.

Our conclusion: although not everything is set in stone yet, the DPP is coming. Those who inform themselves now and preferably react already will save themselves time and money .
